This is a collection of poems celebrating African American fathers and the influence that they have over their families. The poems are coupled with the artwork of Javaka Steptoe. This would made a nice gift for dad.

In this story a young boy wishes that he had a father. In fact, he tells him mom exactly what his father would be like it he did have one. The book is filled with all of the great ideas this young boy has about what his gather would be like and what they would do together. In the end, his mother acknowledges that she likes the kind of father that he is talking about. However, if he never comes, she encourages him to remember so that when he grows up, he can be a father like that himself.

Tickle Tickle

Tickle, TickleTickle, Tickle
by Dakari Hru
illustrated by Ken Wilson-Max

This book is about a special tickle time that is shared between a father and his son. This was a fun little book. Once we were done reading, I reached over and started my own little tickle fest with the kids!

Baby Blessings

by Deloris Jordan
Illustrated by James E. Ramsome

I love this book! In fact, I think it is a wonderful gift idea for a newborn or a mom/dad-to-be! This is a beautiful prayer for the day that a child is born.
"Today you are born. You will always be loved with a love that knows no bounds. You will touch the world in your own special way..."
It is a celebration of the abundance of blessings that come with the birth of a child! It is a reminder that mom and dad will always stand by you, love you, support you, and encourage you to "believe and trust in God and His promises of blessings."

Just the Two of Us

by Will Smith
Illustrated by Kadir Nelson

This book is based on Will Smith's hit song, "Just the Two of Us." I didn't recognize all the lyrics, but my husband said that the entire book consists of the lyrics to the song. I think the book was cute in how it expressed the love a father has for his son. But, I do think some of the words/lyrics were a more than I wanted my kid's exposed to at this time. I found that I skipped over some of the words (like when it talked about dating and the opposite sex). But, overall, the message is great!

Bigger Than Daddy

Bigger Than DaddyBigger Than Daddyby Harriet Ziefert
Illustrated by Elliot Kreloff

My boys absolutely love this book! It is about a little boy (Edward) who want to be big...as high as an airplane, as tall as a tree, as fast as a firetruck. He wants to be as big as his Daddy so much so that he and his Daddy play a game where they switch places. Edward soon decides that he has had enough pretending and he no longer wants to be Daddy. He wants to be Edward. His Daddy lists off a number of great things that he and his son could not do together if Edward was indeed as big as a whale. This is a great story about a father and son spending time together. We love this book!
